A VESSEL

A weaver inspects her work

Bronze, Winter 2021

A companion piece to Listening Closely.

This piece is based on the Antheia, the Greek goddess of flowers, love, gardens, and swamps. It shows a weaver holding up the basket that she is making. It is meant to present an intimate moment in a good way. Like Listening Closely, the figure represented is having a private moment with her practice. If you, the viewer, were to stumble upon this scene in life, you would either be intruding or you would be a voyeur. As presented here, the audience may take part in this moment as a spectator without interrupting or objectifying the weaver.

Her face can only be seen through the basket that occupies her attention or in profile. She is dignified by the careful attention that she gives to her basket.

Note the stamens carved into the lilies in her hair.
