SUN GARDEN

A weathering steel calendar describing the weather of Toronto for 1000 days.

Fabrication completed 2023, installation in progress

"Sun Garden" is an architectural-scale calendar made of weathering steel tracking the amount of daylight received by Toronto for 1000 days. It is comprised of 1000 square openwork designs, each of which is unique. It is the second part of a series I started with "Saint Clare's Garden."

"Sun Garden" is about the relationship between the landscape and each of our day-by-day stories. Each day from February 24, 2020 to November 19, 2022 is here. Your birthday is here at least twice, along with every other day from those years.

The piece is complete and installation is underway. A rusty patina will develop over the next few seasons.

Above: 2304 of the unique square designs for this project. I made approximately 3000, one-by-one, before I selected the best 1000. Programmer Benjamin Fridman made the utilities that allowed me to manage a design process of this scope & arrange the final design according to Toronto weather data.
